The first Maxus 12m Catamaran has left G Smyth Boats

The future diversity of inshore fishing was on display recently with the arrival of the new multi-purpose 12 meter catamaran Shazleah to her home port of Killybegs.

Built by G Smyth Boats in Kilkeel for Donegal fishermen Michael and Marcus Munnelly, Shazleah has been designed to fish using Whitefish & Pelagic Trawls, Jigging Machines and Haulers.

The versatility of the Shazleah was a design collaboration between the owners and designer Gerry Smyth resulting in a vessel that can quickly change roles to
target fish by availability or season and take advantage of weather conditions to fish further offshore.

Kirwan Technical Services supplied the two Iveco FPT Nef 6.7 mna main engines coupled to PRM 1000D4 gearboxes.

The deck equipment package by SeaQuest Systems includes:

• SeaQuest 3tonne Trawl Winches
• SeaQuest 1tonne Net
• Sounding Winch
• SeaQuest 2tonne Net Drums
• Complete Hydraulic Package incuding local & deck control, Wheelhouse panels and a LS Hydraulic System

The installation was carried out in Kilkeel by SeaQuest Systems engineers which included fitting out the complete pipework in stainless steel.

Barry Electronics supplied and installed a complete electronics package to Shazleah which also included a 80kHz 6” Sonar to target pelagics.

Built  for Richard Hards and George Jacks of Pecheurs Eccosse Ltd, Sharon Anne provides a roomy and stable fishing platform with ample carrying capacity.

The Maxus 12-metre design has been developed by builder G Smyth Boats, who have delivered a boat with an outstandingly high quality finish, both interior and exterior.

Each hull is fitted with a six-cylinder, Cummins QSL9 diesel turning a 34 by 36-inch four-bladed Hyperform prop on 2.5-inch shafts through ZF gearboxes with 3:1 reduction. Delivering 290hp at 1800rpm each, these engines provide an 8.50-knot cruising speed.

The engines and gears were supplied by South Shore Marine & Diesel of Oxford Island in Northern Ireland.

Each hull has a 1500 litre fuel tank, as well as freshwater tanks.

The engines also provide ample hydraulic power to a pair of SeaQuest 3-tonne trawl winches and a pair of 2-tonne net drums. There is also a landing winch to round out the deck equipment for the boat’s trawl and creel fishing.

The refrigeration system was supplied by Cool Temp Refrigeration Markethill.
